Oceanic "Gope" carved wooden ancestor spirit board, Ara River, Papua New Guinea.

Carved and painted wood

Height 39 1/2; Width 12; Depth 3/4 inches.

These wooden ritual objects represent spirits which can protect clans from sickness, evil spirits, and death. Carved in relief and then painted with lime (white) and red ochre and other native paints, most gope boards have a similar style and depict the face of an ancestral spirit.

Ex collection J.J. Klejman, New York, 1958-1960 (John J. Klejman was a leading New York gallery owner and collector who supplied artifacts to leading museums including the British Museum, London and the Metropolitan Museum, New York).

Condition:
Good, consistent with age and use, some dryness and flaking to pigments, particularly the white pigment, as shown in images. One edge has a small split as shown in image.
